In 1990 the Niagara Escarpment was designated as an International Biosphere Reserve by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in order to protect and monitor the area's ecosystem.
Nature lovers, hikers, rock climbers and skiers are all drawn to the many areas of the escarpment inlcuding Rattle Snake Point and Crawford Lake.
